Case Study: King Fahd Industrial Port

Fosam, Fosroc's joint venture in Saudia Arabia was commissioned to inspect the condition of the concrete and steel berth structures, originally constructed in 1983

Since the port's construction, deterioration set in as a result of galvanic corrosion of steel reinforcement, accelerated by the salty environment, and causing significant revenue losses and decreasing asset value

The port was due to be sold to a private buyer and the requirement was to sell with a guaranteed future operating design life

Specifically, Fosroc was required to identify the problems and specific causes, determine the degree of deterioration and design a comprehensive solution to repair and ensure performance and durability

To combat the varying levels of corrosion on different elements of the structure, the following solutions were proposed:

All these systems were accepted by the port operator as being ideal for demonstrating to an external buyer the future integrity of this asset

Fosroc was able to provide a unique, high technology solution to deliver  the additional durability, enabling active protection for in excess of 25 years

There was no lost berthing time during implementation

The solution also reduced ongoing maintenance and running costs
