Case Study: West Rail
Project
West Rail
Client
Kowloon Canton Railway Corporation (now merged with MTR Corporation)
Year
2003
Location
Hong Kong
Task
-
West Rail is a 30km long twin track railway, connecting Kowloon with Tuen Mun
in the New Territories. The route consists mainly of tunnels and viaducts, including
nine stations built above and below ground
-
Working closely with the contractors and the representatives of the client, Fosroc
provided a wide range of solutions for the various construction methods used on
the project
Constructive Solution
Cement & Concrete Technology:
Barriers:
-
Fosroc Proofex Engage
and Fosroc Polyurea for waterproofing a cut and cover tunnel
-
Fosroc Proofex SM
for waterproofing the roof and podium structures on two stations and the main maintenance
depot
-
Fosroc Aquaprene C hydrophylic gaskets for sealing the gaps between precast segments
in a 4km long twin bored tunnel
Finishes:
Value to Client
-
Fosroc Cement & Concrete Technology expertise assisted the contractors with
developing and gaining approval for concrete mixes that met the stringent project
requirements
-
The innovative Finishes system for Mei Foo station used a water-resisting render
that eliminated the need for a separate membrane. Combined with the speed of spray
application, this saved considerable time and cost for the contractor and gave a
superior end product to the client
-
Fosroc was able to offer a wide range of Barrier solutions to meet the varying needs
of the project. Durable systems were employed for meeting the needs of challenging
below-ground conditions. For podium and roof structures, contractors needed an economical
solution that could be applied rapidly. Again, Fosroc was able to meet this need
